What Do I Need to Know When Heading to the Polls
Polling Place Details
Polls are open from 6:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Election Day. The Polling Place Locator is available to assist you in determining where you should go to cast your vote for the state's Primary and General Elections.
Voter Identification
Do I need to show photo identification in order to vote? The short answer is no. Learn more about voter identification requirements. When you arrive at the polling place the poll worker will request that you present ID but if you do not have any then in most cases, you may sign an affidavit in lieu of presenting ID.  There are several options for identification and they do not need to be a driver's license or have a photo.

Voter Eligibility

To be eligible to vote in the State of Connecticut, you must be able to answer these in the affirmative:

  • Are a citizen of the United States; AND
  • Are a resident of Connecticut (Connecticutis your home); AND
  • Are at least 17 and Will be 18 years old on or before the date of the next General Election.

You may not register to vote in Connecticut if you:

    Were convicted of a felony and have not fully completed confinement and discharged your sentence.

Absentee Voting

Connecticut has strict laws regarding who can vote absentee.

  • Are you an active member of the armed forces of the United States?
  • Will you be out of town during all the hours of voting on Election Day?
  • Does illness prevent you from voting in person on Election Day?
  • Do your religious beliefs prevent you from performing secular activities like voting on Election Day?
  • Will you be performing duties as an election official at a polling place other than your own during all the hours of voting on Election Day?
  • Do you have a physical disability that prevents you from voting in person on Election Day?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, you are eligible to vote absentee.

An absentee ballot will be mailed to you beginning:

  • 31 days before a general election
  • 21 days before a primary
  • 19 days before a referendum
  • Or if your application is received after the above dates, your ballot will be mailed to you as soon as your application is processed.

Complete the ballot, carefully following the instructions that are included and return it by mail or in person.

Only complete absentee ballots received before the close of polls on the day of the election will be counted.

Early Voting

Early Voting allows you to vote in person safely and securely before Election Day.

If you are not registered, but want to vote during the Early Voting period, you may register in person every day of Early Voting at the Early Voting location.

If you are not registered, but want to vote on Election Day, you may register in person on Election Day at your Election Day Registration site.
